Cultural “Face” and Model of Politeness in Intercultural Classroom

Abstract

When “face” relates to society, it has social meanings and could be complex as well. Face could be maintained and lost in different situations. Through analyzing the main characteristics of face and Chinese face with reference to Brown and Levinson’s (1987)model of politeness, this paper discussed how face might influence student’s behavior in communication-oriented intercultural classrooms.
