Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent and severe sleep disorder with frequent upper airway obstruction during sleep, respiratory pauses and hypopneas, poor sleep quality, and higher cardiovascular, metabolic, and cognitive dysfunction. Since then, the diagnosis of OSA has also improved, with diagnostic technologies that are now available, such as polysomnography (PSG) and portable monitoring devices, making diagnosis more accurate and easier. But there are other issues to be overcome, such as standardization and usage. Oral appliances have developed over the years, and surgical procedures have been refined to make treatment more personalised with regards to general lifestyle changes and positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy. This review summarizes the most recent diagnostic techniques and therapeutic strategies for OSA, the pros and cons of each, and future directions for diagnostics and treatment. The goal is to give clinicians a scientific and comprehensive foundation, to standardize treatment, and to provide a scientific basis for enhancing the treatment effects of patients with OSA.
