A novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak in 2020 has attracted worldwide attention. The strong infectious capacity of the virus has caused severe epidemics both at home and abroad.As a risk management system and "social stabilizer", insurance should play an important role in epidemic prevention and control.This paper compares and analyzes the role of domestic and foreign insurance in public health emergencies from three aspects: medical insurance system and relief payment, commercial insurance economic compensation and insurance investment in disease prevention, and puts forward corresponding policy suggestions to improve the insurance system, so as to enhance the ability of China's insurance to deal with public health emergencies.
