An Analysis of Jude’s Tragedy in Jude the Obscure Based on the Theory of Bildungsroman

Abstract

Bildungsroman is an important and common literary genre in modern western literature. The theory of Bildungsroman runs through almost all masterpieces of Thomas Hardy, especially Jude the Obscure. This thesis will focus on the tragedy life of the protagonist of the novel, Jude, and try to analyze the developing progress of Jude’ s life journey, and find out the source of Jude’s tragedy. This thesis covers four chapters: the first chapter is an analysis of the relationship between Hardy’s masterpiece Jude the Obscure and the theory Bildungsroman; the second chapter is an analysis of the characterization and developing progress of Jude-the three stages of the protagonist's growth including innocence period, confusion period and disillusion period, together with the analysis of the reason of Jude’s tragic love story with Sue and the last chapter is a conclusion.
