Abstract

Chinese opera, as a unique art form, combines elements of music, drama and dance, among which musical performance plays a key role in characterization. This thesis aims to reveal the impact of musical performance on characterization by analyzing it in Chinese opera. We find that music in opera is not only a way of performance, but also a tool for conveying emotions. Through the use of melody, rhythm and intonation, opera singers are able to present the character's personality, emotions and inner world in a more profound way; in addition, music also plays a key role in the development of the plot and creation of the ambience, which further enriches the character's performance. Through musical performances, the audience can understand the characters more deeply and enhance their understanding of the plot. Musical performances are closely connected with characterization and are an important part of Chinese opera.
