Abstract

The phase relationship of the Ho–Sn–Ti ternary system close to the Ho–Ti side at 1000 °C was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Two new ternary compounds were discovered, namely HoSn4Ti6 and ɛ(Ho11Sn44Ti45). The HoSn4Ti6 phase adopts a structure type analogous to GdSn4Ti6, with lattice constants of a = 0.58178(3) nm and c = 2.28814(6) nm. The structure phase ɛ is unknown. Meanwhile, the existences of 5 binary compounds (i.e. Ti6Sn5, Ti5Sn3, Ti2Sn, Ti3Sn, and Ho5Sn3) were confirmed. The maximum solid solubility of Ti in Ho5Sn3 was about 10.5 at.%.
