Grit and learning engagement are crucial psychological factors significantly impacting academic achievement. Prior studies mainly focus on the relationship between the two constructs in the general field. However, the relationship between them in second language acquisition has not been sufficiently investigated, especially in the group of senior high school students. The present study explores the relationship between senior high school students’ L2 grit and English learning engagement to fill this gap. The study also examines how academic buoyancy plays a role in the relationship between the two constructs. The results show that L2 grit and English learning engagement are moderate. Academic buoyancy is at a high level. L2 grit and English learning engagement are both correlated with academic buoyancy, which partially mediates the effect of L2 grit on English learning engagement. The results of this study can provide empirical evidence for basic education teachers to promote students’ English learning engagement from the perspective of fostering positive psychological personalities
