The spatiotemporal coupling idea—which underscores the intrinsic relationship between the temporal evolution and spatial patterns of geographical phenomena—offers a crucial means of overcoming the fragmented spatiotemporal thinking prevalent in traditional geography instruction. In the context of updated curriculum standards and contemporary global climate concerns, this study employs El Niño and La Niña as a case study. By analyzing the alignment between this content and the spatiotemporal coupling framework, we construct a tripartite analytical model encompassing "spatial differentiation, temporal processes, and factor correlation," and introduce a problem-chain teaching approach for classroom application. Furthermore, we examine the practical challenges of implementing spatiotemporal coupling pedagogy in authentic educational settings and present a comprehensive instructional design. This research aims to furnish actionable theoretical guidance and practical pathways for teaching process-oriented geographical content at the secondary level.
