Abstract

In The Republic, Plato conceived the ideal city-state as consisting of rulers, auxiliaries, and earners based on his conception of the division of labor among the various classes of the city-state. As the alternative to the ruler, the guardians of the city-state are responsible for the protection of the city- state, so how to train the guardians of the city-state becomes a major issue for the city-state. Plato's efforts to create ideal guardians of both beauty and goodness by implementing music education and physical education have significant implications for character education today.
